I think that there are not different realities . There is only one time line for everyboby and Desmomd due to his endurance to the electromagnetic fields ,can move back and forth . That is why he says he has a son to Linus outside the school . For a reason Widmore and Faraday ,his wife , have created a perfect life for all the people involving the flight ,but the chain starts to break as they start to remember their experience to the island .. Remember sun staring at a miror in the hotel ,Jack staring at his scar ……. The seem lost in their minds all except Desmond

No, you could be right. Like yourself, I'm only speculating. The point is, he doesn't really have a son (in the time line), as this was all discussed in the previous episode. The reason he said he had a son called Charlie, is unclear, but there are a few possibilities.

I just read the comments about Desmond and the son Charlie in both his “lives” I wondered… Has anyone considdered that perhaps Charlie (the son) Was named after Charles Wigmore? Charlie for short? And that perhas somehow Charlie from Driveshaft is actually the son of Desmond and Penny (possible through the time travelling). I've been wondering since season 4 or 5 and never read anyone mention it before.
