To tell you my story, I have to tell you theirs…” With this message, Melinda Gordon, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, sells us on to follow her thrilling adventures.
Based in part on the work of mediums James Van Praagh and Mary Ann Winkowski, “Ghost Whisperer” explores the spiritual side of life and death, focusing on the life of a young woman from Grandview, New York, who has a special ability. She can communicate with the earthbound spirits of the recently deceased. Known around town, not for her gift but as the owner of the successful antiques store, “The Same As It Never Was”, Melinda is as smart as a steel trap at being an intermediary between ghosts and those they haunt. Although sometimes her ability turns out to be a curse instead of a blessing, she always manages to help her “clients”, either it’s about the alive ones or the dead ones…
Melinda’s husband, the former firefighter… now paramedic Jim Clancy played by David Conrad, knows of his wife unique gift to communicate with ghosts and helps her as much as he can. He’s also aware of the dangers and the emotional impact that being an intermediary between the living and dead implies and worries that he might not be able to protect her as well as he would like. Let’s face it! Helping people to cross over into The Light, a metaphor presented by the series as its conception of Heaven, it’s not quite easy, especially when you deal with competition. Romano, an American evil cult leader who lived in Spain, committed suicide along with 115 followers. Due to the huge energy of the mass suicide, he managed to get to The Dark Side becoming stronger than ever. Decided to make happiness and joy vanish from Earth and to destroy good spirits like Melinda who’s in charge of helping souls to “cross over” into The Light, Romano tricks souls to go with him.
Still, this show goes beyond the fact that Melinda can talk to spirits or that some of them let out at her giving you the shivers. The climax is reached when the people involved in the story face a classic dilemma: reason or feeling? “Ghost Whisperer” proves that the desire to clarify things with the loved ones who died on their feet is stronger than any reason. Politically, the denouement is very calm but of an overwhelming emotional intensity. The series’ third “pylon” is Andrea Marino (sometimes mentioned as Moreno). She becomes Melinda’s best friend and also essential to the store and Melinda, because of the very fact that she knows about her gift. As the show progresses, the ghosts’ trusted ally reveals her secret to Delia Banks, her new friend and employee, Rick Payne, a professor at Rockland University who teaches occult classes and Eli James, a psychology professor, who is real unique… he has the gift of hearing ghosts, but not seeing them. “Ghost Whisperer” returns with new episodes on September 25. The dead are talking… and she is listening. You wouldn’t like to miss this tv show.
