I found my biggest performance gain on Vista came from diabling the Windows Search/Indexing tool from within Services. I had used perfmon which showed that sucker hammering away whilst I was trying to perform other tasks. There must be a bug in the logic that tells it what to do and when.
Surprisingly searches are no slower.
I also have nearly 2gb of disk back from being able to delete its files!
