How to Speed up Vista

vista logoWindows Vista is great, but heavy when it comes to hardware resources.

So, how do you speed up your Windows Vista system?

First you add more ram, if this isn’t enough you buy a better hard disk (with 8mb or 16mb of cache).

If you don’t want to spend all that money, you should follow the next steps to tweak and improve your Windows Vista performances. On small PCs, less is more:

1st option is to strip Windows Vista manually:

  1. Lose What You Don’t Need
  2. Keep your drivers fresh
  3. Hose Out the Background
  4. Use ReadyBoost
  5. Speed Up the Interface
  6. Miscellaneous Hacks
  7. Defrag Once in a While

2nd option (my favorite) use TweakVI for Windows Vista:

TweakVI was designed for easy tweaking an optimizing a Windows Vista based computer.

You will need hours to browse through all the features of TweakVI:

  • Activate hundreds of hidden Windows Vista settings
  • clean your registry
  • activate system and software restrictions
  • display detailed system information
  • create a 256 MB RAM drive
  • protect your privacy
  • clean your harddrive
  • manage TrueType fonts
  • improve your internet connection
  • optimize your CPU
  • optimize your RAM
  • manage system updates, and much more …
  • you can even transfer your tweaks and settings to other machines!

  • I think I'm still going to wait for some better driver support before I do anything.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just go back to windows XP?
  • IMO Vista is one of Microsoft's biggest failures, similar to Win ME.
  • pb fan
    cool i might try this
  • Tweak program does not speed up Vista if it has newly been installed on your machine. If you have used Vista for a long time, yes then it removes clutter, and other stuff to get it back into decent running condition. Otherwise don't expect much from this Tweak program / utility.
  • If you are stuck with vista better speed it up, if not XP is the solution.
  • Upgrade your PC for Windows Vista

    use auslogics boostspeed 4.2....

worst opperating system yet hope window 7 is better
  • vee
vista is coll because you dont always have to recover from errors and some virus arnt effective on vista.the only thing about it is that you should have a computer made for it with the nessary hardware proceesors video card, ram 2gb is best
  • rick
man ive had vista for over 3 years since day one and ive hated it since day one it started slow and has just gotten worse i dont understand why microsoft wont let us back off to xp for free maybe then they would have happy customers
  • fcku
If you think vista sucks, you have one of two problems, either your not running ultimate or your machine is crap. You talk about XP as if it is the best, what did you have to compare it to 98SE. vista ultimate blows doors on XP not to mention Xp will be obsolete in a year maybe two, and you won't be able to give it away, just like win95. Win 7 blows doors on vista, it has advanced features that take all the whining out, so you cry babies get ready. Everybody wants to complain or something for free, windows delivers the entire package, you can do a lot more with winx9 than any linux system or apple. Admitt it, denial hinders YOUR ALL PC's

    Haha!

Can you imagine if windows 98 supported todays processors and memory? Zoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom!!!!

I work on computers everyday and have many applications open at a time, I prefer speed over nice glossy window edges If you want to speed things up then disable all the fancy graphics and run it like windows 98 PC with bog standard graphics.

Or you could buy a nice machine with a quad core 3ghz cpu, 64gb ddr3 ram, and a 15000 rpm hard drive running windows vista ultimate 64bit. If you complain afer that then you wil just have to wait until 2050 when we have 32core 14ghz computers with 500gb ddr9 ram and windows13 256bit.

    Cant wait for that day!!!
  • WTF
i dont think this is solution
    ADD more ram? ( no $ )
    just i got one advice
JUST dont conflick your driver (i got it >SHIT BSOD is pop up ever time when i use high end software )

I wouldn't hold your breath for Windows 7. Only appears to be marginally better than Vista. In some testing with working with office automation it is 160% slower than Vista. Removing some of the under the bonnet security i.e Windows Defender Service made a big difference but I cant see corporates rolling out systems on that basis. I would hope Window XP is here for a while until Microsoft get the shit sorted out.

Have any of you tried Linux? Fedora 11 is excellent for all 'serious' uses it beats Win easily- if you are a gamer then how about playstations

Honestly people i love xp,but vista is getting there.all you need are some tweaks because it really sucks resources.Have some good ram, good video card and you have a lovely system with vista.i hated vista too but realized its not that bad.XP is better but hey whats the point in bad mouthing vista.
  • Johnny
Ok. Here's the truth. Microsoft is a bit modest about the min system requirements for Vista. Get yourself a decent Dual or Quad Core CPU, at least 2GB of RAM, a fast Video Card and a HDD with at least 16 MB of cache. Believe me . . . Vista KNOWS how to use the latest CPU's and you will end up with a stable and powerfull platform for most games.

I HAVE 3 GB of RAM and Vista shuts down every time I load more than one of the graphics programs in my suite. with no other programs running but the Explorer Vista uses over half my RAM resources. I thought I was upgrading and it turns out I shot myself in the foot. Vista has made my work-life miserable, and I would gladly downgrade back to XP.

I went thru all these tips and apart from the services.exe advice, which stopped almost everything from working (I set almost everything to manual on the assumption it would "kick in" if needed, it didn't) I have probably quadrupled the speed of my Vista! I have HATED vista for the year I have had it, because it is so slow and has too much security. But thanks to these tweaks, I might start liking it. XP was good, but too many BSOD and crashes. Vista is more stable and gets less viruses and crap. With these fixes, best of both. Thank you for the info! Now let me sort the wifes laptop.....

I found my biggest performance gain on Vista came from diabling the Windows Search/Indexing tool from within Services. I had used perfmon which showed that sucker hammering away whilst I was trying to perform other tasks. There must be a bug in the logic that tells it what to do and when.
    Surprisingly searches are no slower.
I also have nearly 2gb of disk back from being able to delete its files!
