My StumbleUpon vs Digg Experience

One of my posts got to Digg’s front page and short after got Stumbled.

So let’s see a comparision between the two big social networks.

digg vs stumbleupon

(3 days)

Traffic Driving:

Day one: digg 13,301 / stumbleupon 878

Day two: digg 32,962 / stumbleupon 1,139

Day three: digg 3,346 / stumbleupon 3,173

Digg proved to bring more traffic in a small period time, but StumbleUpon proved to drive more sustained traffic over time.

I’ll have to update Garret French’s list at StumbleUpon vs. Digg with my own opinions:

1. Both are built through user submissions.
2. Both deliver a sense of “discovery” to visitors.
3. Digg lacks personalization and does not recommend stories.
4. Nor does Digg cluster its users and make recommendations based on social network.
5. StumbleUpon doesn’t cover breaking news well - tech, world or otherwise.
6. In Digg you see all stories at once - in StumbleUpon you see one at a time, have the attention to react to it, and then move to the next making for a more considered rating.
7. As a user I find it more likely that I will get that wonderful, magic sense of “Discovery” if I cruise StumbleUpon. Digg is good for a lift too though, and it may be that I’m slightly out of their audience :)

Update:
8. StumbleUpon is so much better when it comes to Photography.
9. After a few days of using StumbleUpon you will be addicted.
10. At half the amount of subscribers that StumbleUpon has, Digg is aiming to emulate the SU concept.
11. StumbleUpon’s personalization concept — where content is being provided based on your own desires — has proven to be quite successful.

12. Digg is more popular. 10 minutes after my post got to Digg’s front page my site is down(CPU quota exceeding).
I start a live chat with the hosting support crew:

Shaun G: How long has the message been up for?
Cucirca Florin: i just got to digg’s front page…
Cucirca Florin: 10 minutes
Shaun G: Ah
Cucirca Florin: i’m receiving lots of traffic
Shaun G: yeah, i bet
Shaun G: Go for it now
Cucirca Florin: thanks
Cucirca Florin: I need to activate wp-cache plugin to handle it.
Shaun G: Hehehe
Shaun G: I went to digg front page to check it out
Cucirca Florin: :))
Shaun G: I use Peekvid at home :)
Cucirca Florin: :)))
Cucirca Florin: hehe thanks very much shaun
Shaun G: Which one do you think is the best?
Cucirca Florin: peekvid :P

All fixed out.

In conclusion… we all know that digg is the best but give some attention to StumbleUpon which is cathcing up fast. It may seem counterintuitive to use the web for random navigation - something that only Stumbleupon offers - but to me, it’s relaxing, fun and exposes me to content I’d never see on my own.

Which is the best for you?
